Power Lifter Training for Gold


Vietnamese power lifter has his sites set on a London 2012 medal.  Learn about the long road to being a professional athlete.

China Opens New Sports Training Center


The legacy of the Beijing Paralympic Games was an increased awareness of adaptive sports throughout China.  In order to improve performance of Chinese athletes the new China Disabilities Training Center  recently opened.    


Indonesian has not medaled in the Paralympics in 10 years

Table Tennis is the sport which could bring the Indonesian Paralympic Team their first medal in ten years.  The athletes have their sites set on the final and will be training hard to get to this spot.  


Adventure travel in Austria

The Austrian company Freizeit-PSO is offering adventure travel trips around Austria. Individuals with both physical and intellectual disabilities can sight up to experience hiking, climbing, diving and rafting.

Adaptive Sport in Ghana


The National Paralympic Committee of Ghana is working hard to increase awareness and opportunities for persons with disabilities to experience sport.  They are working to produce future Paralympians.  


UN and Sport for Development and Peace


The United Nations has stated that the Olympic and Paralympic Games are an incredible tool to teach peace, development and humanitarian values.  This is a major part of the UN Millennium Development Goals.

The British company Sainsbury has created a TV ad for the Paralympic Games featuring David Beckham.  High profile support has created a record amount of attention towards the games.


Paralympic Games not on Prime Time in the USA


Causing a serious uproar there will be very minimal prime time coverage of the Paralympic Games in the United States.  Petitions are being signed and social media campaigns are being launched but this still might not do the trick.  Luck for everyone that the International Paralympic Committee is bringing it live via the internet.

Merging the Olympics and the Paralympics


There is an ongoing debate about merging the Olympics and Paralympics.  The Slate gave their opinion  as well as The Current. 


Paralympians competitive advantage (includes video)


Boosting is the term used to describe a unique form of "doping".  Athletes with disabilities will harm themselves in order to produce an adrenaline rush.  Athough rare it is still a problem and needs to be carefully monitored.  

Paralympic athletes with intellectual disabilities


After being banned from competition following the Sydney Paralympic Games athletes with intellectual disabilities are being allowed back into competition.  Although their total numbers are only around 120 they will be closely watched to ensure their is no more cheating.  Here are two reports from the International Paralympic Committee and the other from the Independent Newspaper.

Paul Callahan is going to represent Team USA in the Sonar sailing class.  He also heads up a non profit  called Sail to Prevail which gets everyone out on the water.



Huge Herr predicts whats next

MIT professor Huge Herr who lost his legs in a climbing accident shares what he feels is going to be the next step in adaptive technology. "He uses words like “sexy”, “cool” and “powerful” to describe his disability."

Sport as a rehab tool seems like a great idea.  It is fun, social, and you can get some fitness.  These United States Veterans use sport as a way to get back into life.  Chris Noack, head of the VA Sports Rehab program, shares his thoughts on why this is an important part of getting back to normal.

National Junior Disability Championships:

The National Junior Disability Championships took place this week in Mesa Arizona, USA. This annual event is hosted by Wheelchair and Ambulatory Sports USA and the 2012 local partner Arizona Disabled Sports . Youth from all over the world attend to compete in athletics, archery, power lifting, swimming, table tennis and more.


British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship: 

Dutchwoman Esther Vergeer have not been beaten in wheelchair tennis is 9 years. She claimed her 12th British Open Wheelchair Tennis Championship title this week.



What is Goalball?

Canada has the win in Goalball! (includes video)

Canada beats Japan to win the fourth International Goal Ball Classic in Alabama. This exciting sport is a blast to play, highly competitive and all spectators need to keep extra quite so the player can hear the bells in the ball.

London 2012 Smart Phone App:

The official London 2012 App for Smart Phones has been released for the Olympic and the Paralympics.  This app was designed with the sports fan in mind and includes useful information on venues, schedules, scores and more.

The UK newspaper the Guardian has published a short article answering some hot questions about the Paralympics that some people might be afraid to ask. Where did the name Paralympics come from? How hard do Paralympians train? How should I behave around Paralympians? Find answers to these questions.

Channel 4 "Meet the Super Humans" commercial makes a big impression (includes video)


Channel 4 has a good thing going.  They created a TV spot called "Meet the Super Humans" about the 2012 British Paralmypic Team that has gone viral on the Internet.  This is a short article about the making of the piece which includes a high definition clip of the ad.  Watch it once and you will have to watch it again.

Wheelchair Rugby (AKA Murderball) schedule for London 2012

The International Paralympic Committee has released the schedule for the London 2012 Wheelchair Rugby Match ups. The tickets are scarce so plan on watching this on TV and tell your friends.

Individuals at the top of their game, fit, toned and naked. Each year ESPN releases the Bodies Issue and it always causes a stir. This year was no exception. Oksana Masters, a Paralympic rower is featured in her birthday suit. You be the judge.

Arnaud Assoumani, who one a gold medal in Beijing 2008, has gotten his gold arm back.  French police saved the day when they returned it after thieves stole it.

Hang gliding...good clean fun


Hang gliding is a sport not for the faith of heart. This activity does have it's risks but it also has the reward of soaring like a bird. These individual are stepping up and leaving their disability on the ground.

This very blog "Adaptive Sport and Recreation" published an informative post this week on Adaptive Archery for persons with disabilities. This great pastime can be enjoyed as a recreation or as competition. It sure is making the headlines these days.

Adapt2Achieve Conference

Disabled Sports USA is hosting their Adapt2Achieve Conference in Seattle Washington on August 19-21. Developed with the adaptive sports program in mind this conference will feature train sessions in adaptive archery (see above), adaptive climbing, and nonprofit administrative topics.  CEUs will be offered from ATRA.  Register today!
